Changing Gear Ratios

1. Remove the eight 1/4" UNF nuts and washers and slide the end cover off the studs.

2. Remove the gear linkage from the selector finger.

3. Move the two outer selector rods forward to the "in gear" position. Selecting the two gears will lock the gear cluster allowing the rear nuts to be removed.

4. Remove the upper pinion shaft nut (LH thread) and the lower layshaft nut (RH thread) with a 1 1/8" socket and breaker bar.

5. Remove the nine 5/16" UNF nuts and washers from the bearing carrier.

6. Using a soft hammer, tap the bearing carrier away from the maincase dowels and slide it off the pinion shaft complete with gear train. Do not use excessive force. Support the gears, clutch rings and hubs with the hand as they come away from the pinion shaft. A special tool is available from Elite Racing Transmissions to simplify this process, Part Number ERT-TO-008.

7. With the assembly supported on its end, remove the layshaft from the bearing carrier ands slide the layshaft gears and the spacers from it. The pinion gears, hubs and dog rings will then be free to slide from the bearing carrier.

8. A gear ratio consists of one gear for the pinion shaft and one gear for the layshaft. Never attempt to mix a gear from Elite with a gear from another manufacturer.

9. To replace fit the dog rings and the required gear ratios to the bearing carrier and reverse the above procedure.

10. Torque up the layshaft and Pinion nuts to 100 lbs.ft, slide the outer two selector rods back to the neutral position and check that all gears will engage. Replace the end cover and refill the gearbox with the correct quantity of oil, see technical specification. Finally, connect the gear linkage to the selector finger.
