Stripping the Free Diff

1. With the differential unit on the bench, remove the eight crownwheel bolts and tap off the crownwheel.

2. Take off the cross pin cirlip(s) and slide out the cross pin. You can now remove the planet gears, the belleville washers and the side gear and washer.

3. Wash all parts and carefully inspect for cracks and wear. Examine the cross pin carefully for wear by checking the diameter at the outer ends where the planet gears and diff body run. Wear in the gears will show as excessive backlash when assembled. Replace all parts as necessary.

4. Reassemble in the reverse order to the above using new crownwheel bolts which should be set to 75 lbs.ft. Ensure all threads are clean and put a drop of Loctite on the new bolts.
