Changing Gear Ratios

1. Remove the four 5mm nuts and washers and gently tap off the end caps.

2. Actuate reverse gear from the cockpit, pull the gear position stop cable and 'down change' once more to actuate the 5/R position of the selector barrel. Now remove the gearchange cable from the bell crank.

3. Remove the pinion nut (LH Thread) and the layshaft nut (RH Thread) using a socket and breaker bar.

4. Remove the eight 8mm nuts and washers.

5. Very gently tap the bearing carrier away from the maincase dowels and slide the Bearing Carrier Assembly (ERT-AS-003) off the pinion shaft. It will be necessary to support the hubs and gears by hand  as they come away from the pinion shaft.

6. With the assembly on its end, remove the layshaft from the bearing carrier and slide the layshaft gears and spacers from it. The pinion hubs, gears and dog rings will then be slide from the assembly. With the sequential design you will notice that it is possible for the selector forks to rotate around the barrel, Take every care to ensure this does not happen.

7. Check all bearings and gears for excessive wear and replace as necessary.

8. Reassemble the gearbox by fitting the ratios as required and reversing the above procedure. Remember that the gearbox selector forks will still be in the 5/R position so these two gears should be selected before reassembly.

9. Torque up the layshaft and pinion nuts to 100 lbs.ft (135.6 Nm), reconnect the gearchange cable and 'upchange' 2 gears to return to neutral. Check that all gears will engage, refit the end caps and refill the gearbox with the correct quantity of oil (see technical specification)
